Yesterday afternoon, during routine inspections and measurements of the pipelines, specialists from the Hrazdan operational unit of Veolia Djur discovered a concealed leak on the "Makravan-Abovyan" water pipeline, with a water loss of 30–35 liters per second. It was considered a "concealed" leak because a stormwater drainage system runs directly beneath the pipeline. Water escaping through the damaged section of the pipe was flowing into the storm drain and, mixed with rainwater, was discharged into the Hrazdan River without surfacing, which made detecting the location of the leak especially difficult.
Immediately after the discovery, Veolia Djur specialists announced a 24-hour water shutdown in the town of Abovyan and neighboring settlements.
Early this morning, repair work began. The most challenging part is draining the pipeline, which, due to its location, requires the use of multiple pumps simultaneously. Only after this step will the team proceed with welding the 40–45 cm crack in the pipeline. Following that, the process of refilling the pipeline with water will begin. This step also requires a certain amount of time, after which the water supply to the communities will be gradually restored.
The Veolia Team is doing everything possible to restore water supply to the affected areas even earlier than the announced deadline.
