Three times a year—during spring, summer, and autumn—Veolia Djur Company cleans and repairs the stormwater drainage system. Areas with recurring rainwater accumulation are cleaned more frequently, as needed. During heavy rainfall, stormwater drains are sometimes unable to properly handle the flowing water. Such a situation occurred yesterday evening on Babajanyan Street in the Malatia-Sebastia administrative district. Thanks to the prompt response of specialists from Veolia Djur’s “Shahumyan” operational site, the Yerevan Municipality, and the Rescue Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, rainwater removal was organized. The cause of the accumulation was the clogging of backflow valves.Since early this morning, our specialists have been working on Kyr Kyrkoryan and Sebastia streets in the Malatia-Sebastia administrative district, cleaning inspection manholes and removing accumulated soil and sand, which will be disposed of by our partner organization EASM.
Work in other streets of the administrative district will continue tomorrow as well. In general, Yerevan’s stormwater drainage system has a number of shortcomings. First, not all streets are equipped with stormwater drains, and in many cases, the capacity of existing ones is insufficient to ensure the complete and rapid removal of rainwater. In many areas, the expansion of asphalt-covered surfaces has led to an increase in the volume of runoff water, while the capacity of stormwater pipelines has remained unchanged. In many multi-apartment residential areas, internal drainage networks either do not exist or are only partially completed. It should be noted that Veolia Djur Company operates and maintains the stormwater systems assigned to it under its contract.
