Through cooperation between Veolia Water and the Parakar Community, reconstruction of the water supply network has begun on Yerevanyan Highway and Yeritasardakan Street in Merdzavan. The water pipelines constructed in the 1960s–1970s, illegal connections and an unregulated network had been causing serious problems both for water supply and emergency repair operations. The situation became even more challenging when road paving works began. As a result of removing the asphalt, the water pipelines were exposed at ground level, revealing the existing faults and damaged sections. To address the issue, it was decided to jointly replace the water supply network.
Approximately 1 km of pipeline is being replaced along Yerevanyan Highway, with 60 household connections planned to be installed. Another 600 metres of pipeline will be replaced on Yeritasardakan Street. Reconstruction there will begin once the works on Yerevanyan Highway are completed. As a result, the project is expected to prevent water losses of 13 litres per second, establish a manageable distribution network and ensure a more regular and reliable water supply.
The problems that have accumulated over decades cannot, of course, be resolved overnight. However, the phased works being carried out in the settlement provide a solid basis for improving the situation and ultimately resolving the issue.
